For many of us, Friday is the best of the week, and this week it’s even better as we celebrate Margarita Day!
Each year February 22 is declared National Margarita Day in the US, in honour of the cocktail that is reputed to be the most popular tequila drink in the United States.
The day itself is said to be the brainchild of American real estate agent Todd McCalla, who started it to celebrate his love of this delicious citrussy beverage.
As with many cocktails there is no-one source that can claim to be the true inventor of the margarita, although Difford’s Guide, the oracle for discerning drinkers, traces its roots back to a tequila drink called the daisy which originated around 1939.
In Singapore we’ll be having a little celebratory margarita (or two, after all it is Friday!) made with Codigo 1530 tequila.
While the margarita has been a fixture on every self-respecting cocktail menu since the 1930s, it’s cool sophistication was given a modern twist in the seventies when it became known in its grown up slushy version after an inventive bartender decided to put an underworked soft serve ice cream machine to good use.
Today, its beauty is in its simplicity.
Try it for yourself:
2 parts Codigo 1530 Blanco tequila
1 part triple sec
1 part lime juice
1 teaspoon Codigo 1530 agave syrup
Shake everything with ice in a cocktail shaker and strain into a glass. Salud!
